About 10% American air travelers reports having had sex of some kind at an airport, compared with about 8 percent who are members of the Mile High Club, according to an important new survey conducted by a flight-shopping website.

Of those who had some sort of  “sexual encounter,” 42 percent reported that it took place in a public restroom, while 28 percent got busy in the “storage cupboards” (?) and 14 percent “under a coat.” Twelve percent coupled in the VIP lounge, which at least makes some sense; 17 percent claim to have been caught in the act by airport staff.

NEWS Passengers caught with 10 kilos of cocaine in pants at JFK

Customs and Border Patrol officers at New York’s JFK airport said they captured two more passengers who attempted to smuggle drugs by strapping packages of cocaine to their legs.

The most recent seizure came when two men tried to bring more than 10 kilos of cocaine into the United States on April 19, officers said. Both men allegedly had the drugs taped to their legs under their clothing, and one man taped the drugs to his back.
The two men traveled on the same flight from the Dominican Republic to New York last week, but it’s unclear if they knew each other.

The two men were arrested and are facing federal narcotics smuggling charges, according to the CBP.

NEWS Drone maker DJI makes no-fly zones large areas of Iraq and Syria

Drone maker DJI has quietly released a series of software updates that geofence off large areas of Iraq and Syria, indicating the Chinese firm is covertly helping the war against Islamic extremists.

The updates, quietly made to DJI’s Go app without any public fanfare, will prevent drones made by the firm from flying over large areas of Iraq and Syria. These no-fly zones are in addition to the usual NFZs implemented around airports and military airfields.

A relatively new tactic is to strap a grenade or similar small IED to the drone before dropping it off over the target.

A Google Earth map shows all of the NFZs implemented by DJI, including the latest ones.

VIDEO Video of Water bomber refilling with water from the inside

The reason that it’s so rare to see footage like this is because there are simply not many of these planes around. Only 90 CL-415s were built and they’re not used on a continuous basis. As of this writing, we’ve only seen two of these water bombers in action from this vantage point.

According to the description of the video, this took place in Portugal and the crew was getting water from Rio Douro. You can actually see them pass over a dam before dipping down and getting to work.

NEWS Air France and BEA investigate flight #AF423 serious incident at Bogota

On March 11, flight #AF423 departing from Bogota to Paris almost missed its takeoff from Bogota with 275 passengers and crew on board.

For a reason still unknown, the Airbus A340-300 took the entire length of the runway, before taking off in extremis at the end of the asphalt runway at only 1.5 meters height.

Bogota-El Dorado airport is located at 2,548 meters between two mountain in the Andes. The altitude reduces the power of the engines, but an A340 is able to take off safely from there.

A similar event, involved the same Air France aircraft (reg. F-GLZU) on 4 April as well as Lufthansa A340-300 last November.

Air France didn’t wait to react. The A340 involved in both incidents was removed from service and Air France has also decided to limit the cargo from 5 to 8 tonnes.

A meeting scheduled for next week between the investigators of Air France, BEA and Airbus may be able to find out more.

The A320neo significantly reduces noise levels, generating only half the noise footprint compared to previous generation aircraft. Equipped with fuel-saving Sharklet wingtip devices nitrous oxide emissions are 50 percent below regulatory requirements as outlined by the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP). In addition, the aircraft with LEAP-1A engines is proven to deliver at least a 15 percent fuel savings compared to Virgin America’s current generation aircraft, which is equivalent to cutting 5,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions with each plane every year.

“We are honored to be the first operator of this high in-demand aircraft,” said Virgin America President Peter Hunt, speaking at the ceremony attended by Virgin America teammates, Executives from Airbus, CFM and the aircraft lessor GECAS. “The new A321neo – the third member of the Airbus A320 Family to join our Virgin America fleet – will allow us to further reduce our unit costs and enable us to further reduce our carbon emissions.”

Virgin America currently operates a fleet of 63 Airbus A320 family aircraft comprised of A319ceo and A320ceo aircraft powered by CFM’s CFM56-5B engines.

The new A321neo will become the largest aircraft in Virgin America’s fleet, featuring 185 seats – a 24 percent higher capacity at same comfort levels than its current A320s. Inside the cabin, Virgin America flyers will continue to enjoy three custom-designed classes of service, touch-screen personal entertainment and an on-demand food and cocktail menu on every flight in addition to power outlets at every seat. The aircraft is expected to enter service on May 31, 2017 with its inaugural flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

As first announced in April 2016, Virgin America was acquired by Alaska Air Group in December 2016.

NEWS Pentagon announces deployment of 5th-Gen F-35A Fighters to Europe

The Pentagon has announced the deployment of fifth-generation F-35A fighter jets to Europe this weekend.

The US Department of Defense said that the F-35A Lightning II fighters are sent to Europe to conduct training for several weeks as part of the European Reassurance Initiative.

The Pentagon said the deployment represents “natural progression” of the F-35 program and would allow to demonstrate operational capabilities of the jets.

“It also assists in refining requirements for eventually basing the F-35A in Europe, which is scheduled to receive the aircraft in the early 2020s,” the release added.

The F-35 Lightning II is a fifth generation fighter jet, combining advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, fully fused sensor information and network-enabled operations.
Three variants of the F-35 jet are being introduced into the Air Force (F-35 A), Navy (F-35C), Marines (F-35B).

NEWS US drops biggest GBU bomb ever in Afghanistan from Hercules MC-130 plane

The United States dropped its largest non-nuclear weapon on Thursday after it targeted an ISIS network of caves and tunnels in eastern Afghanistan.

U.S. forces used a 30-foot long, GPS-guided GBU-43 bomb, at around 7.30pm local time in the Nangarhar Province.

The weapon weighs a staggering 21,600 pounds.

It is known as the ‘Mother Of All Bombs’ – a play on ‘MOAB,’ an acronym that stands for ‘Massive Ordnance Air Burst.’

A crater left by the blast is believed to be more than 300 meters (1,000 feet) wide after it exploded six feet above the ground. Anyone at the blast site was vaporized.

President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he was ‘very, very proud’ and called the operation ‘really another successful job. We’re very, very proud of our military.’

The Pentagon is denying that the attack was a revenge strike despite the fact that it came in the same area of Afghanistan where a Green Beret soldier was killed on Saturday.

Officials in Afghanistan say the U.S. bomb targeting caves in the country’s east has killed at least 36 Islamic State militants.

REPORT Fatigue fracture causes SAAB 340 propeller detachment in-flight

The ATSB has today released a preliminary report into the in-flight propeller detachment involving a Regional Express SAAB 340 aircraft near Sydney Airport on 17 March 2017.

The REX aircraft, VH-NRX, at Sydney airport after the incident. The ATSB’s inspection of the aircraft identified that the propeller shaft fractured, leading to the separation of the propeller.

An inspection of the propeller at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra revealed a fatigue fracture that began in the propeller mounting flange (the part that attaches the propeller to the gearbox) and continued into the propeller shaft. The inspection also found corrosion near the initiation of the fracture.

ATSB Chief Commissioner Greg Hood says the ATSB has been working closely with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), SAAB, GE Aviation (engine manufacturer) and Regional Express during the investigation.

“This is the first known critical failure of this type, initiating within the propeller hub flange of the GE Aviation CT7-9B engine,” Mr Hood said.

“Both the operator and the engine manufacturer have already taken proactive safety action in response to the ATSB’s safety advisory notice.

“GE Aviation is conducting metallurgical analysis on the propeller flange and hardware at its laboratories in Cincinnati, USA. They are also inspecting additional propeller gearboxes and reminding all operators to follow maintenance and inspection procedures. GE Aviation will release additional maintenance and inspection recommendations if they become necessary.

“Regional Express has quarantined all propeller gearboxes with propeller shafts of the same series as that installed in the aircraft involved in the incident.”

The ATSB’s ongoing investigation will focus on maintenance procedures associated with the propeller gear box shaft and examine factors that may have contributed to the fatigue fracture at the propeller mounting flange.

Mr Hood says the ATSB will continue to work closely with all involved parties to determine the cause of the propeller detachment.

NEWS Airbus A350-1000 has completed water ingestion test from Istres Air Force Base in France

Airbus’ new A350-1000 – the longest-fuselage version of its A350 XWB jetliner – marked another certification milestone by performing tests that validated the aircraft’s ability to operate from waterlogged runways and taxiways.

Performed this month at the Istres Air Force Base in southern France, the A350-1000 was purposely run along an inundated surface to demonstrate that large quantities of water or slush can be safely ingested by the twin-jet’s turbofan engines and its turbine-powered auxiliary power unit during takeoff, landing and taxi.

For these tests, crewmembers progressively accelerated the aircraft through the standing water five times at speeds from 80 to 140 knots, with the A350-1000 performing as expected.

The trials were documented with video and photo coverage, as well as the first use of a camera-equipped drone to provide airborne views of the test runs.

As the latest member of Airbus’ leading widebody family, the A350-1000 is scheduled to enter airline operation before year-end. In addition to having a longer fuselage accommodating 40 more passengers than the A350-900 version currently in service, the A350-1000 also features more powerful Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, a modified wing trailing-edge and new six-wheel main landing gears.

NEWS First flight for 737 MAX 9 is set for tomorrow!

737 MAX 9 First Flight scheduled for Thursday, April 13th subject to weather and other factors.

737 MAX 9 is the perfect answer to the need for growth while maintaining maximum airline profitability. As well as 16 more seats than the incredibly popular 737 MAX 8, it offers lower trips costs than the competition, the lowest trip costs, which minimizes the risk airlines take on as they grow. And yet provides more than enough additional seats to deliver consistently higher profits through all market conditions.

What’s more, 737 MAX 9 enables airlines to reach farther than almost every single-aisle route they operate today. It has the longest range in its sector without the investment in any auxiliary fuel tanks, and with one auxiliary tank, matches the versatility of the 737 MAX 8 with a range of 3,515 nautical miles.

NEWS United Airlines boss Oscar Munoz will not resign after flight #UA3411 incident

United Airlines’ chief executive has said he will not quit amid an explosive backlash to video of a screaming man being dragged off a plane.

Oscar Munoz said he felt “shame and embarrassment” and vowed it would never happen again to a seated passenger on one of United’s overbooked aircraft.

The embattled aviation boss said the passenger in question, David Dao, deserved “certainly an apology”.

Mr Munoz had initially described Mr Dao as “disruptive and belligerent”.

“That shame and embarrassment was pretty palpable for me and for a lot of our family,” the contrite chief executive told ABC’s Good Morning America programme.

Asked if he would stand down, Mr Munoz said: “No. I was hired to make United better and we’ve been doing that and that’s what I’ll continue to do.”

Mr Dao was pulled off Sunday evening’s flight from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky, because the flight was fully booked, and the airline wanted to get four passengers to leave to make room for four staff members.

After Mr Dao refused to leave the plane, law enforcement officials dragged him out, and Mr Dao was left bloodied by the confrontation.

The footage provoked international outrage and the Dao family has issued a statement expressing gratitude for the “outpouring of support”.
