NEWS Drone flies within 30 feet of passenger jet landing at Heathrow

Screen-Shot-2016-02-26-at-2.12.06-PM-640x397

According to a safety incident report published by the United Kingdom’s Airprox air safety board, an Airbus A319 landing at Heathrow International Airport last September narrowly avoided a collision with a drone flying at an altitude of 500 feet as the jet was on its final approach. The pilots reported the small hovering helicopter-style drone passed about 25 yards to the left of the cockpit and just 20 feet above the aircraft.

The A319’s wingspan is 112 feet, so that would mean the drone missed the airliner by as little as 30 feet. The pilot reported that there was no time once the drone was sighted to take evasive action. The pilot reported the drone to air traffic controllers, and the police were dispatched. However, the drone pilot was not found. The incident was classified as meeting risk category A—the highest level incident covered by the reporting system short of an actual collision.

NEWS #MH17 report identifies Russian soldiers suspected of downing plane in Ukraine

53rd-report-public-1

A British-led online investigative team says it has identified Russian soldiers linked to a surface-to-air missile suspected of downing Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in Ukraine in 2014.

The Bellingcat report paints a picture of up to 100 Russian soldiers and officers who it says could have known about or been involved in the plane’s downing on 17 July 2014, at the height of the conflict between Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed separatists. All 298 people on board died in the crash.

The new report raises the likelihood that “justice could be served”, Bellingcat head Eliot Higgins told the Guardian. Although names were changed and faces blurred in the public report, the identities were provided in a version given to Dutch prosecutors in December.

“We found all the names and faces of the commanders in that second battalion. Was one of them the one who shot down MH17? We can’t say for sure, but the police could have information that would allow them to incriminate them,” Higgins said.

EMERGENCY Smoke into the cockpit of Alaska Airlines Boeing 737, all crew members were taken to the hospital

Capture41

A mid-air scare forced a Seattle-bound Alaska Airlines flight to return to Washington, D.C., for an emergency landing.

Smoke began pouring into the cockpit of the Boeing 737 about five or 10 minutes after taking off from Reagan National Airport on Monday, forcing the pilots to put on gas masks.

Recordings of radio communications captured the conversation between the flight crew and air traffic control: “Alaska 1, we’re declaring an emergency. Smoke in the airplane.”

The pilot turned around and made an emergency landing at Dulles International Airport, just 30 miles away.

Emergency crews rushed toward the plane after it landed. One passenger says she saw one of the pilots, wearing an oxygen mask, walk into an ambulance.

All six crew members were taken to the hospital.

None of the passengers were hurt. They were later re-booked to Seattle.

NEWS Oman Air pays $75m, a record price, for landing slots at Heathrow

Middle East carrier Oman Air has paid a record amount for a pair of take off and landing slots at Heathrow.

The airline paid $75m for the two slots in a deal with Air France-KLM.

The airline declined to confirm the price paid for the slots. Air France-KLM refused to comment.

This price would make the slots $15m more expensive than the previous most expensive slot pair, that was bought by American around a year ago, from SAS.

One of the slots Oman has purchased would allow an early morning arrival into Heathrow.

The government has yet to decide whether to accept the recommendation of the Airports Commission and give the go-ahead to a third runway at Heathrow, this would allow for more slots at LHR.

It remains unclear whether a decision will be announced this summer.

NEWS 2015 was a good year for aviation safety

Montreal – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for the 2015 safety performance of the commercial airline industry.

  • The 2015 global jet accident rate (measured in hull losses per 1 million flights) was 0.32, which was the equivalent of one major accident for every 3.1 million flights. This was not as good as the rate of 0.27 achieved in 2014 but a 30% improvement compared to the previous five-year rate (2010-2014) of 0.46 hull loss accidents per million jet flights.
  • There were four accidents resulting in passenger fatalities in 2015, all of which involved turboprop aircraft, with 136 fatalities. This compares with an average of 17.6 fatal accidents and 504 fatalities per year in the previous five-year period (2010-2014).
  • The 2015 jet hull loss rate for members of IATA was 0.22 (one accident for every 4.5 million flights), which outperformed the global rate by 31% and which was in line with the five-year rate (2010-2014) of 0.21 per million flights but above the 0.12 hull loss rate achieved in 2014.
  • The loss of Germanwings 9525 (pilot suicide) and Metrojet 9268 (suspected terrorism) that resulted in the deaths of 374 passengers and crew are tragedies that occurred in 2015. They are not, however, included in the accident statistics as they are classified as deliberate acts of unlawful interference (i).
