NEWS Flight #AA62 Miami to Paris was diverted to Boston on Wednesday night after a passenger became unruly
Police in Massachusetts say a man from France has been arrested after causing a disturbance on a Miami-to-Paris flight.
A spokesman for the state police says American Airlines Flight 62 was diverted to Boston's Logan International Airport on Wednesday night after a passenger became unruly.
The passenger was subdued by a federal air marshal while the plane was in the air and arrested by state police once the plane landed at about 10 p.m. Police say 50-year-old Edmund Alexandre, of Paris, was charged with interfering with a flight crew. He was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital for observation and treatment of a pre-existing medical condition. Whenever doctors deem him able, he will be arraigned in East Boston District Court. It could not be determined if he has a lawyer.

BREAKING Possible eruption near #Bardarbunga
A row of newly formed cauldrons (depressions) was spotted in the Vatnajokull glacier near the Bardarbunga volcano during a reconnaissance flight today, leading to speculation that a small eruption had begun there. Scientists estimate that 30 - 40 million cubic metres of ice have been melted.
According to a statement from the Icelandic Civil Protection Agency (CPA) early Thursday morning, three cauldrons were seen, 4 - 6 km long, 1 km wide, with a depth of 10 - 15 metres, near the southeastern rim of the Bardarbunga caldera. They are not believed to be associated with the intrusion that has been propagating to the north in recent days.

NASA image of the day: Testing Composite Cryotank Technology For Future Deep Space Missions
NASA has completed a complex series of tests on one of the largest composite cryogenic fuel tanks ever manufactured, bringing the aerospace industry much closer to designing, building, and flying lightweight, composite tanks on rockets. At NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, the tank was lowered into a structural test stand where it was tested with cryogenic hydrogen and structural loads to simulate stresses the tank would experience during launch. The project is part of NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate, which is innovating, developing, testing and flying hardware for use in NASA's future missions. Cryogenic propellants are gasses chilled to subfreezing temperatures and condensed to form highly combustible liquids, providing high-energy propulsion solutions critical to future, long-term human exploration missions beyond low-Earth orbit. In the past, propellant tanks have been fabricated out of metals. Switching from metallic to composite construction holds the potential to dramatically increase the performance capabilities of future space systems through a dramatic reduction in weight. > NASA Completes Successful Battery of Tests on Composite Cryotank Image Credit: NASA/David Olive via NASA

NEWS 3 major earthquakes during the night #Bardarbunga
27th August 2014 06:30 - from geoscientist on duty
The night started with a 5.3 event in Bardarbunga at 00:16 hours.
Around half an hour later activity around the tip of the dyke started increasing and reached some kind of "high" around 2 o'clock and has continued at that level since with many events of magnitude 2-3.
Just before 2 o'clock there was a magnitude 4.5 event just east of Askja caldera. Few microearthquakes have been measured there earlier this week.
At 02:50 there was a 5.2 event again in Bardarbunga.
Total events automatically detected from midnight until now are 500, most of them around the tip of the northward migrating dyke.
Implications of Askja event is still premature to speculate on. However, we are watching the area closely.
There seems to be a slight increase in activity compared to same time. The >M5 events in Bardarbunga are still interpreted as being relaxation process of the caldera due to magma pressure changes and the propagating dyke.

NEWS United flight #UA1462 diverted to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport after passengers fight over legroom
The $22 device locks onto the tray table on the back of the seat, making it impossible for the person in front to recline during the flight. United Airlines and other U.S. carriers have banned the device. The Federal Aviation Administration says it can’t be used during taxi, takeoff and landings, when tray tables and reclined seats aren’t supposed to be in use anyway.
United flight attendants asked the man to remove the device on the Sunday flight, but he refused.
Things were so bad that the female passenger threw a cup of water at the man, according to the AP. At that point, the pilot diverted Flight 1462 to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport
Both passengers were removed from the flight and the remaining passengers continued on their trip to Denver. No arrests were made.

NASA image of the day: 25 Years Ago, Voyager 2 Captures Images of Neptune
NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft gave humanity its first glimpse of Neptune and its moon Triton in the summer of 1989. This picture of Neptune was produced from the last whole planet images taken through the green and orange filters on the Voyager 2 narrow angle camera. The images were taken on Aug. 20, 1989, at a range of 4.4 million miles from the planet, 4 days and 20 hours before closest approach on Aug. 25. The picture shows the Great Dark Spot and its companion bright smudge; on the west limb the fast moving bright feature called "Scooter" and the little dark spot are visible. These clouds were seen to persist for as long as Voyager's cameras could resolve them. North of these, a bright cloud band similar to the south polar streak may be seen. In the summer of 2015, another NASA mission to the farthest zone of the solar system, New Horizons, will make a historic first close-up study of Pluto. Although a fast flyby, New Horizons' Pluto encounter on July 14, 2015, will not be a replay of Voyager but more of a sequel and a reboot, with a new and more technologically advanced spacecraft and, more importantly, a new cast of characters. Those characters are Pluto and its family of five known moons, all of which will be seen up close for the first time next summer. Image Credit: NASA via NASA

Preparations are underway for Exploration Flight Test-1, or EFT-1. Orion is the exploration spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to destinations not yet explored by humans, including an asteroid and Mars. It will have emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. The first unpiloted test flight of the Orion is scheduled to launch later this year atop a Delta IV rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida to an altitude of 3,600 miles above the Earth's surface. NASA image of the day: Supernova Seen In Two Lights
The destructive results of a mighty supernova explosion reveal themselves in a delicate blend of infrared and X-ray light, as seen in this image from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and Chandra X-Ray Observatory, and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton. The bubbly cloud is an irregular shock wave, generated by a supernova that would have been witnessed on Earth 3,700 years ago. The remnant itself, called Puppis A, is around 7,000 light-years away, and the shock wave is about 10 light-years across. The pastel hues in this image reveal that the infrared and X-ray structures trace each other closely. Warm dust particles are responsible for most of the infrared light wavelengths, assigned red and green colors in this view. Material heated by the supernova’s shock wave emits X-rays, which are colored blue. Regions where the infrared and X-ray emissions blend together take on brighter, more pastel tones. The shock wave appears to light up as it slams into surrounding clouds of dust and gas that fill the interstellar space in this region. From the infrared glow, astronomers have found a total quantity of dust in the region equal to about a quarter of the mass of our sun. Data collected from Spitzer’s infrared spectrograph reveal how the shock wave is breaking apart the fragile dust grains that fill the surrounding space. Supernova explosions forge the heavy elements that can provide the raw material from which future generations of stars and planets will form. Studying how supernova remnants expand into the galaxy and interact with other material provides critical clues into our own origins. Infrared data from Spitzer’s multiband imaging photometer (MIPS) at wavelengths of 24 and 70 microns are rendered in green and red. X-ray data from XMM-Newton spanning an energy range of 0.3 to 8 kiloelectron volts are shown in blue. Credit: NASA/ESA/JPL-Caltech/GSFC/IAFE via NASA

NASA image of the day: Testing Electric Propulsion
On Aug. 19, National Aviation Day, a lot of people are reflecting on how far aviation has come in the last century. Could this be the future – a plane with many electric motors that can hover like a helicopter and fly like a plane, and that could revolutionize air travel? Engineers at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., are studying the concept with models such as the unmanned aerial system GL-10 Greased Lightning. The GL-10, which has a 10-foot wingspan, recently flew successfully while tethered. Free-flight tests are planned in the fall of 2014. This research has helped lead to NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate efforts to better understand the potential of electric propulsion across all types, sizes and missions for aviation. Qatar Airways Flight QR23 escorted to Manchester Airport following bomb hoax
A 47 year old man from the North West of England is under arrest on suspicion of making a hoax bomb threat aboard a Qatar Airways flight from Doha (DOH) to Manchester (MAN)
The incident came to our attention at 13:47 when @GMPolice issued the following report
Chief Superintendent John O'Hare, said: "An incoming plane has been escorted into the airport by the Royal Air Force as a result of information received by the pilot about a possible device on board. "We don't know how genuine this threat is but it is absolutely vital we deal with the situation as a full emergency. "As a result people will see the police and other agencies at the airport and on the airfield. "At this time I would urge them not to be alarmed. Our response will be as comprehensive as it is proportionate with the safety of those on board and in and around the airport our paramount concern."
According to unconfirmed reports, a passenger had handed a note claiming there were explosive onboard to cabin crew who alerted the pilot.
The Airbus A330-300 (A7-AEH) with 269 passengers and 13 crew on board was seen to make 2 circles over Derby before continuing its journey to Manchester escorted by a single Typhoon jet from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire as part of its "quick reaction alert role"
On landing, the plane was surround by "emergency services" and armed police boarded the plane and arrested a man. He was escorted off the plane by armed police in handcuffs.
In a statement a spokesperson at Manchester airport said
Flight QR23 from Doha to Manchester landed safely this afternoon after the crew on board had received a threat during the flight. Runway operations were temporarily suspended at Manchester while the incident was dealt with and satisfactorily resolved by the authorities.
The airport reopened after a 25-minute runway closure. A number of incoming flights were diverted to nearby airports. Passenger safety remains the priority of the airline and airport.
A total of nine flights were diverted to other airports (including 5 to Leeds) while a number of planes (including one carrying the Manchester United football team) were kept in a "holding pattern" until the airport resumed normal operations.
Following a search by police they issued a statement confirming that no explosive had been found.
