Passenger Shaun O'dea, told the Sun "Everyone has horrified looks on their faces; to be able to go to the toilet is a basic need."

NEWS FAA orders new 787 electrical fix to prevent power failure

All Boeing 787 operators will be required to periodically deactivate the electrical system to avoid a problem with a newly-discovered software bug that could cause the aircraft to lose alternating current (AC) power, the US Federal Aviation Administration says in a new airworthiness directive. The agency adopted the final rule after Boeing reported the results of a laboratory test showing a total loss of power is possible if the generator control units run continuously for eight months, says the FAA’s 30 April notice in the Federal Register.

VIDEO Oakland-bound Hawaiian Airlines flight 24 makes scary landing in Maui

Flight 24 left Kahului Airport at 11:18 a.m. heading for Oakland, but after 10 minutes, the flight crew declared an emergency.

Hawaiian Airlines said an odor of fumes could be smelled in the cabin of the plane, while the Federal Aviation Administration said the smell was detected in the cockpit.

Ultimately, the pilot returned to Kahului.

A passenger on that flight told KHON2 that soon after the plane took off, it “was doing weird stuff. It didn’t seem to be going up and leveling off. It seemed we only got up and then come back down again. We were back below the clouds, which seemed weird it would happen. It banged a couple ways here and there in an odd way. It started becoming apparent that something was going on.

“About eight minutes total into the flight, the pilot came on, he sounded really nervous. Everybody on the flight was looking at each other. He was doing his best, and in hindsight did a great job. But he was nervous, stuttering a little bit. He said we’d be back on the ground in 10 minutes. … We just were blind at that point. Pretty soon, stewardesses went down the aisles, looking into the compartments because we could smell smoke. Something was burning.”

“You could just smell a little bit of smoke coming up. I was in the first class cabin and didn’t really smell very much until right after we landed then we started to smell it, but people mid-flight were coughing,” said passenger Sharlene Harper.

NEWS Boeing 787 Dreamliner glitch can make it lose power, FAA reports

The US air safety authority has issued a warning and maintenance order over a software bug that causes a complete electric shutdown of Boeing’s 787 and potentially “loss of control” of the aircraft.
In the latest of a long line of problems plaguing Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, which saw the company’s fleet grounded over battery issues and concerns raised over possible hacking vulnerabilities, the new software bug was found in plane’s generator-control units.
The plane’s electrical generators fall into a failsafe mode if kept continuously powered on for 248 days. The 787 has four such main generator-control units that, if powered on at the same time, could fail simultaneously and cause a complete electrical shutdown.
