NEWS: Flight diverts to Shannon Airport so Passengers can use the toilets

An Open Skies flight from  New York to Paris diverted to Shannon airport this
morning so
passengers could use the toilets.
The 184 crew and passengers landed at Shannon at 7.30 this morning and took off again at 9.38.

The crew told air traffic controllers at Shannon that they wished to divert so that passengers could use the toilet facilities there.

The flight was about 500km south west of Ireland and still 90 minutes from its destination when the crew made the decision to divert.

It is understood that a problem developed with the Boeing 767 jet’s toilets rendering all of them unserviceable.

The flight landed shortly after 7.30am and was met by airport ground staff. The crew had also requested that engineers be standing by to service the aircraft’s toilets.

The flight continued its journey at 9.38am

BREAKING: Russian Military Aircraft carrying 92 Aboard Crashes Into Black Sea

One body has been found after a Russian military plane carrying 92 people, including a well-known military band, crashed into the Black Sea on Sunday after takeoff from the resort town of Sochi on its way to Syria.

Most of the wreckage was found in the sea about one mile from shore, the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding that the plane carried 84 passengers and eight crew members. The country’s investigators have opened a criminal case into the crash.

64 members of the Alexandrov Ensemble a Russian Military choir, who were travelling to a Russian Air Base in Syria planning a congratulatory concert in Syria for New Year’s Eve, thanking the soldiers for their service. There was also a number of journalists who were covering the event

The plane, a Russian-made Tu-154, disappeared from radar two minutes after taking off from the resort town of Sochi on Sunday morning. Russia’s official weather forecast agency said that conditions near the airport were “normal, easy,” the Interfax news agency reported.

Until recently, the Tu-154 was one of the most widely used civilian aircraft in Russian aviation industries. Designed in the 1960s, the plane is still used by a number of Russian government agencies. Russian airlines have mostly replaced outdated Soviet planes with new ones.

President Vladimir V. Putin was notified about the crash, the Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, said. The rescue effort is led by Sergei K. Shoigu, the defense minister.

NEWS Flights dropping poop from air to be fined in India

India’s top environment court has reportedly ruled that airlines will be fined 50,000 Indian rupees (800 U.S. dollars) if their planes drop poop into the air during flight.

The National Green Tribunal has also directed India’s civil aviation regulator to conduct surprise checks to ensure that airlines don’t flout its ruling, in the wake of a plea by a retired Indian Army official who accused planes of dumping human waste over residential areas in the national capital.

“The DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) shall also issue directions that aircraft on landing shall be subjected to surprise inspection to see that human waste tanks are not empty,” the court was quoted by the media as saying.

Aircraft toilets store human excreta in special tanks, which are normally cleared once the plane has landed. They are also called “blue ice” because of the special chemicals added to the toilets to reduce smell and break down the waste.

ALERT Los Angeles LAX Airport evacuated after suspicious bags found at 3 Terminals

Passengers are now being allowed back into the LAX following a brief evacuation after suspicious bags were discovered at three terminals Wednesday.

Some flight delays have been reported because of the evacuations, particularly in Terminal 6, LAX spokeswoman Mary Grady said.

“People should definitely check with their airlines especially if they are on an airline that is flying out of Terminal 6,” she said.

The airlines reporting delays are American, Alaska, Delta and Virgin America, she said.

Airport officials briefly evacuated the ticketing areas in Terminal 6 and Terminal 7 following the discovery of two suspicious bags.

In Terminal 6, a TSA dog discovered the suspicious bag and, in Terminal 7, a bag was left unattended, LAX officials said. The suspicious bag alerted by the TSA dog was in a non-public area, officials said.

The suspicious bags at these terminals have been cleared, Grady said.

As operations were getting back to normal, however, an unattended bag was found in a men’s restroom in Terminal 5. The area has been blocked off, and the item will be checked out, Grady said.

Passengers were being allowed to move through the concourse and no evacuation has been ordered, she said.

The scare comes as the busy holiday travel season picks up. Wednesday and Friday are expected to be the busiest days at LAX, with about 239,000 people expected to pass through the airport on those days.

The traffic at the airport was already busy with holiday travellers early Wednesday morning, Airport Police said.

LAX is expected to be the third-busiest airport in the country over the holiday season, behind Atlanta and Chicago, but the busiest origin-and-destination airport, meaning more passengers will start or end their travel at LAX than any other airfield.

NEWS This Extra 330 is the fastest-climbing electric-powered airplane ever!

While we’ve become accustomed to seeing electric cars demonstrate serious performance—Tesla’s Model S P90D can accelerate to 60mph in 2.8 seconds—the mere idea of electric-powered airplanes is unfamiliar to most of us. But the development of electric powertrains for aircraft is starting to gain momentum.

On November 25, a German-made electric-powered Extra aerobatic aircraft took off from Dinslaken, Germany and climbed from the ground to 9,842 ft (3,000m) in 4 minutes and 22 seconds. The Extra handily beat the previous electric aircraft 3,000m time-to-climb record of 5 minutes, 32 seconds set in 2014. Some analysts expect to see electric-powered passenger aircraft carrying up to 100 people on short-haul routes of up to 600 miles (965km) by 2030.

ALERT British Airways crew vote for Heathrow strike

British Airways cabin crew have voted overwhelmingly for strikes in a dispute over pay, the Unite union says.

More than 2,000 workers were balloted about the action, which will take place at Heathrow Airport. It comes after cabin crew rejected a 2% pay rise.

The action will begin after 21 December and Unite has yet to finalise dates. It did not say if the strike would affect travellers over Christmas.

Some 79% of crew that took part in the ballot voted for action, Unite said, urging British Airways to return to the negotiating table.

The dispute concerns about 4,000 staff who have joined the airline since 2010 on “Mixed Fleet” contracts, who do not feel they are paid enough. More than 2,000 of them are Unite members.

A BA spokesman said: “We are extremely disappointed that the union is creating uncertainty for our customers.

“Mixed Fleet Unite represents about 15% of our cabin crew. We remain focused on resolving this issue as quickly as possible without any disruption to customers.”

NEWS Successful Embraer test flights at St Helena Island

An Embraer ERJ-190-100 jet aircraft, operated by Embraer Commercial Aviation as a non-commercial trial and demonstration flight, visited St Helena Airport between Wednesday 30 November and Friday 2 December 2016. The flight, carrying 11 crew, including two SA Airlink pilots, arrived from Recife, Brazil, and made a smooth landing on Runway 02 (from the south). This aircraft type is one of a number of potential solutions to operating regular flights to St Helena.

As planned, the Embraer aircraft completed a variety of landings, take-offs and circuits at St Helena Airport. This flight generated considerable real time data which, together with a pilot’s report, will help St Helena Airport build a more comprehensive picture of the conditions under which we will be asking a scheduled air service to operate. Embraer will be submitting a full report shortly.

The Embraer aircraft completed a number of successful landings and take-offs from the north (Runway 20) – together with a number of planned ‘touch and goes’,where the aircraft briefly touches down before powering up for take-off. The touch and go manoeuvre allows the pilot to assess a landing without the time taken for a conventional landing.

Fly-bys and approaches at different angles were carried out to check the wind conditions and approach paths. The aircraft also conducted climbs from the Airport at various angles. Air Traffic Control actively assisted these trials by giving the necessary weather data and other information to the aircraft.

Over the two days at the Airport, the Embraer team experienced a variety of wind conditions, including turbulence on Runway 20. Work is continuing to understand and mitigate the turbulence and wind shear experienced on Runway 20.

NEWS Qantas announced Perth-London direct flights for 2018

Direct flights from Perth to London will be introduced in 2018, marking the first time Australians will be able to fly direct to Europe.

Announcing the new non-stop service, Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the 17-hour flights would be the third-longest passenger flights in the world.

Mr Joyce said the airline’s new 787 Dreamliner aircraft would be used on the route, which would operate from the domestic terminal at Perth Airport from March 2018.

The announcement came after the WA Government ended an impasse with Qantas and agreed to help fund an upgrade of the terminal.

Premier Colin Barnett said the state would contribute $14 million for capital works at the airport, to be used for the construction of quarantine and Australian Border Force infrastructure.

Qantas wanted the non-stop service to operate out of a domestic terminal, rather than the new international terminal, to make it easier for passengers with connecting flights.

Skywest says there were 51 passengers and four crew members aboard the Embraer-manufactured E175.

An uncrewed Russian spacecraft meant to resupply the International Space Station appears to have suffered a malfunction shortly after launch today. Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, said that it lost communication with the spacecraft 383 seconds into the flight. The third stage of the rocket, which helps propel the cargo ship to its final orbit, reportedly shut down “earlier than planned”.

The spacecraft could already be headed back towards Earth if a malfunction occurred while the spacecraft was still executing its third stage burn. The ship is carrying more than 5,300 pounds (2,400 kilograms) of cargo, including food, water, propellant, and other supplies.

The wing tips of two aircraft collided at Mumbai Airport today. The incident happened when the wings of an incoming Kuwait Airways aircraft and an outbound IndiGo narrow body aircraft clipped before 6am when it was still dark.

The sharklet of an IndiGo Airbus A-320 (reg. V-TIFP) was damaged. The plane returned to the terminal.

In a statement, IndiGo said: “IndiGo confirms that the wing tip of its Airbus A-320 aircraft came in contact with the wing tip of the Airbus A-330… of an international operator… while taxiing at Mumbai airport Wednesday morning. At about 5.45am, while the aircraft of this international airline was taxiing toward the parking stand, at the same time an IndiGo flight (flight #6E207) was taxiing to depart to Jaipur from taxiway N and W under air traffic control’s (ATC) instruction.“

“Approximately at 5.45am, the pilot of this international airline was advised by ATC to move ahead to make way for IndiGo aircraft. As per (rules), while an aircraft is on taxiway N, Taxiway W4 must not be permitted to use as standard wingtip clearance is not met… Hence, due to the taxiing process, the Airbus 320 aircraft of IndiGo came in contact with Airbus A330,“ IndiGo said.

Kuwait Airways’ spokesperson Andrew Chupeau said in a mail: “As the Kuwait Airways A-330 was in a holding stationary position when the incident took place, the IndiGo A-320 came into contact with the Kuwait Airways A-330… Kuwait Airways can confirm that no passengers were at risk; however, it is understood that the wingtip of an A-320 aircraft scratched Kuwait Airways’ A330 (reg. 9-KAPA) left outboard flap. Kuwait Airways is cooperating fully with both Indian civil aviation authorities and Kuwait’s DGCA, in order to investigate this incident.“ The flight #KU301, had flown into Mumbai from Kuwait City .

The IndiGo spokesperson said one of its passengers saw the wings clipping and “immediately alerted the crew. The highly experienced pilotin-command operating 6E 207 immediately decided to take precautionary measure and returned the aircraft to the parking bay. The flight crew ensured to keep all passengers informed about the situation and assured to maintain calm on board. All passengers were safely accommodated to the other aircraft.“
